Hunnekuhl captured this image while working on her bachelor's project at the Department of Zoology / University of Osnabrück. It shows the ventral nerve cord and the body wall muscles of a fresh water leech in very high resolution. In the upper left corner oblique muscle strands are visible, a special feature of Leeches. Hunnekuhl chose this image because it is not only beautiful, but also conveys a large amount of information.
The image was created using confocal laser scanning microscopy.
