Small World Speaks
A Compelling Gut
Dr. Amy Engevik
In this Small World Speaks episode, Dr. Amy Engevik, Assistant Professor, Medical University of South Carolina and a repeat Nikon Small World winner, shares the origin story behind her 2024 4th Place image of a small intestine section of a mouse.
Of course, my all-time favorite is the fourth-place image.
I actually submitted it three times. I remember submitting it the first time, and I think I did a different color scheme, and this is going to, you know, I thought honorable mention maybe, or image of distinction. And then it didn’t. That was my favorite.
Then I submitted it. I think I changed colors the next year and resubmitted it, and it didn’t place again. So, the third time, I think I remember submitting them, and I didn’t have time to pick out new images because it was the day of. I’m just going to resubmit some of the others that didn’t do well and see what happens. It will just be a wash.
Surprisingly, it did very well that year. It just depends on who is judging it and whether or not they find it compelling. I think it’s really nice. I like the symmetry. I think the intestines are absolutely beautiful. I think the villi are stunning and the crypts are so cool. It’s an amazing organization system in the body that really maintains the function of your entire body, which is pretty incredible.
