Small World Speaks

Looking back on Nikon Small World

Barbara Loechner

In this Small World Speaks episode, Barbara Loechner, former Nikon Communications Manager (1977–2000), discusses the competition’s inception and how it has grown into what it is today.

Whatever the thinking was in the very beginning, wouldn't it be fun to have a competition, you know, of photographic images?

Nikon has been wise enough to continue with it and to develop it and improve on it.

And when you say you have thousands of entries today, well, if we had 120, we, we were doing good.

Biomedical or industrial or, you know, botanical. The parts of nature, the parts of life that us ordinary people can't see, and that's really, you know, interesting.

I thought it would fade away, quite frankly. You know, the advent of digital photography and so much video, I think it's become a lot more important than during my tenure.

It's a big thing.
