Kenneth Spring is a senior scientist in the Laboratory of Kidney and Electrolyte Metabolism at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute in Bethesda, MD. He has taught courses on light microscopy for over twenty years and is co-author with Dr. Shinya Inoue of the second edition of the textbook, Video Microscopy.

Nancy Kedersha is presently a member of the Harvard Medical School faculty at the Brigham and Woman’s Hospital, studying the cellular response to stress. During her studies in the laboratories of UCLA, she perfected a technique of staining and photographing cells- beginning her collection of “bio art”. The disturbing beauty of these images has been seen in Discover, Time, Newsweek, and Le Figaro, as well as many textbooks and museum exhibits. Nancy is also a past Small World competitor, placing in the top 20 on numerous occasions.

Michael Davidson is the director of the Optical and Magneto-Optical Imaging Center at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory at Florida State University. Mr. Davidson’s photomicrographs have been published in over 1000 national and international scientific journals, popular magazines and newspapers. He has also successfully marketed his photomicrography, which has appeared in paper products, garments and software. Before becoming a judge, Mr. Davidson previously won two top ten Small World awards, placing 9th in both 1987 and 1990.
